The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
